TCP Custom Outdoor Living began in Houston in 2009 as a small design and build company specializing in patios, decks, and pergolas under the name Texas Custom Patios. In the early years, Steven Schell and the other owners focused on developing best practices for patio and deck building, emphasizing high-quality materials and ensuring that new spaces blended seamlessly and looked original to existing homes.

Over time, Texas Custom Patios evolved and expanded beyond patios, giving rise to the concept of "outdoor living." By 2015, the company was designing and building not only patios but also pool houses, room additions, balconies, fireplaces, pools, and other elaborate outdoor spaces envisioned by homeowners. It became clear that the original name, Texas Custom Patios, no longer reflected the full range of services offered.

To better align with its evolution, the company rebranded as TCP Custom Outdoor Living, keeping "TCP" as a nod to its origins.

Today, TCP Custom Outdoor Living operates two independently owned and operated locations. The Dallas-Fort Worth office is led by Steven Schell and Justin Barnett, O.D. While this location uses the domain TCPdfw.com, you can also view thousands of legacy projects on the original site texascustompatios.com.

TCP DFW continues to carry forward the legacy of Texas Custom Patios, constantly evolving by implementing the latest building practices, technology, and material selections. From a simple attached patio cover to multi-million-dollar custom projects, we are your full-scope design and build partner for outdoor living spaces.

We believe that regardless of the project's size, thoughtful design and planning are essential to ensure homeowner satisfaction (see our process page for more details). We prioritize space planning and functionality while maintaining the home’s original aesthetic. While we appreciate modern and contemporary styles, we also understand that traditional designs are prevalent in Texas homes. During the design process, we explore opportunities to introduce creative and modern touches to each space.

Internally, drawing from Justin Barnett’s medical background, we hold weekly educational sessions and monthly grand rounds to ensure our staff stays up-to-date on best practices. Externally, we pride ourselves on educating homeowners and maintaining clear communication throughout the project.
